This isn’t really a board game in that it only requires five dice per player, but it hits the table a lot (pun intended), because it’s a hoot. You can find the rules online, but here is how we play:
- Each round, players roll their dice and see only their hand; ones are wild and can be any other die face (2-6).
- A player makes a bet, naming a die face and the number of times she thinks it’s in the dice pool between all players.
- The players take turns either increasing the bet (die face or the number of dice) or challenge the bet.
- During the challenge, all the dice are revealed to determine if the bet was correct.
- Whoever loses the challenge loses a die and a new round starts until there is only one player left.
While the game is simple, like poker, there is probability and bluffing. You can play the odds and make conservative bets to give yourself safe bets. Or you can also go balls out and start the game with a bet of six sixes because you have three sixes in hand and hopefully the entire dice pool can cover you, or because you know that no one else has the stones to call you out. You make your own luck.
There’s a lot of laughter and smack talk that goes with this game, but keep in mind that after a half dozen games, it can get stale. Bet money to keep things fresh.
This can be played with any number of players as long as you have five dice per player. The more the merrier. Even in our two player games, Liar’s Dice is fun because you pick up on tells or corner your opponent into difficult bets.
All the fun of poker without being poker
Perhaps the cheapest game ever, unless you play for money
Discover the inner gambling problems of your friends
Gambling is sinful
This game is super simple to teach your friends and start playing right away. I brought some dice to work one day so my coworkers and I booked a conference room and played for an hour. This is especially good for people who think poker is a bit complicated (in terms of figuring probability) but still want to play a gambling game.
